Bad Breath

What is it?

Halitosis, also known as bad breath, can be embarrassing and sometimes cause anxiety. Many people always carry gum, mouthwash, and mints with them to help fight bad breath. However, these products only fix the problem temporarily and do not address the true cause.

Certain foods, habits, and health conditions are usually the cause of bad breath. It is extremely important to be consistent with proper dental hygiene if you want your halitosis to go away. If simple at home techniques such as brushing and flossing do not solve your problem, talk to your dentist. It is important to make sure there isn’t a more serious condition going on that is causing your bad breath.

Depending on the source of the cause, bad breath odors may vary. Some people worry too much about their bad breath even if they have little to no odor, while others have bad breath and are completely unaware of it.

When to see a doctor
If you have bad breath, review your oral hygiene habits. Do what you can to make lifestyle changes, such as drinking plenty of water, using dental floss, and brushing your teeth and tongue after eating. If you don’t see improvement in about a week, see your dentist. If your dentist suspects a more serious condition, he or she may refer you to a physician.
